NOTÍCIASThe Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar) classified the event that caused great destruction in the municipality of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu at the end of the afternoon of this Friday (07) as a tornado. The municipality was one of the most affected in the State during the passage of a cold front, which passed through all regions of Paraná with several storm cores.
“One of these storms, classified as a supercell, generated a tornado over the municipality of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, causing quite severe damage to the city. There were reports of vehicles overturning, entire trees falling, and even brick houses collapsing. The tornado's classification was based on damage analysis and also on images from the Simepar meteorological radar,” explains Reinaldo Kneib, meteorologist at Simepar.
Within the Fujita scale, which relates to wind intensity and associated damage, the tornado was initially classified as F2 – equivalent to winds between 180 km/h and 250 km/h. However, there is strong evidence that the tornado may have exceeded 250 km/h in some parts of the city, which would change the classification to F3.
"We will continue monitoring and analyzing the images from the photos and aerial images, in conjunction with Civil Defense, and if necessary, we may reclassify the intensity of the phenomenon, as it was extremely severe," Kneib emphasizes.
